My LIFE

MY SON HAS A TATTOO!!
…and my daughter has BLACK HAIR.. though she has naturally beautiful
reddish brown hair. But my daughter’s hair coloring will be a topic
for another day.
Now returning to my 18 year old son and his TATTOO. My dad had a tattoo
from his years in the Navy during WWII. His tattoo I believe was an American
Eagle perched on an anchor. When I was a kid.. I thought it was very cool!!
My dad was a logger, he was trim and a very muscular man. But then in
his later years his
tattoo faded and looked more like a huge bruise from a ‘punch in
the arm from some ‘Brutus’ like character. But… that
was then.. this is now.
So let’s Fast Forward to my son. His tattoo is about HIS FAITH.
It is a picture of the cross with a crown on it with the Greek letters
for ‘Bond Servant of Christ’. IT IS A STATEMENT OF HIS FAITH!!
VERY COOL!
Now my next concern is that my son does not know Greek,
and is taking the word of Eric his youth pastor who incidentally Curt
has played many a prank on. So if I was Eric I might consider this opportunity
for payback.. and play the prank that keeps on giving and giving. A TATTOO.
Hmmmm.. what diabolical tattoo concept would I dream up. As far as Curt
knows he has the Greek letters on his arm that say… ‘I
have not changed my underwear in 2 months!’ Of course the only
time it would get a chuckle is if he passed a seminary student on the
street.
Next concern is.. tattoo parlors typically are not BAPTIST
RUN operations. Not to judge a book by it’s cover but if I am a
Christian who wants to express my faith in a tattoo I would be more than
a bit nervous having the tattoo drawn by a Goth looking walking talking
tattoo mural with 35 visible piercings and wearing a tshirt that says
‘Marilyn Manson for Pope!!’ Now I expressed my concern regarding
trusting a prank riddled youth pastor for proper Greek words for his tattoo,
well… I still would trust him a ba-zillion times more than this
Gothic Prince of Tattoos… and his assorted collection of ‘needle
tortures’.
Now back to having a tattoo, and setting aside the above
mentioned TATOO CONCERNS… I somehow think it is very cool that Curt
would choose to have a tattoo making a statement of his faith. My wife
said to Curt ”You know, this tattoo will be with you the rest of
your life.” Curt replied something to the effect that .. “That’s
good because I will be a Christian my whole life too.”
Kind of like bumper stickers... on your car. I heard
of someone recently who was following a car with a bumper sticker that
said.. “HONK IF YOU LOVE JESUS” Well, the person honked and
was flipped off by the driver with the Christian bumper sticker. Forgetting
the message on his bumper. YOWTCH!!
So when I step back and think.. I have a son who believes
in Jesus, and wants to be public with his faith. Maybe if TATTOOS were
available in Jesus day.. MAYBE.. there would have been JOHN THE TATTOO-IST
instead of “John the Baptist!!” He would be saying “Make
way for the Lord.. and get a tattoo
as an outward expression of your faith.” Ok,.. ok.. probably not.
BOTTOM LINE IS.. I have a son who is NOT SHY with his
faith!! So what could I be complaining about? THE COST?? Maybe.. and probably..
but with the reality that MONEY IS NUTTIN’!! I think a tattoo is
a great statement. IN FACT.. I am considering a TATTOO to make a statement
about my faith. But if I do get one I definitely am not trusting my son
for the proper Greek to comment on my faith… I would be in MTV Speak..
Punk’d by my son. With something like..
‘Warning!! this man has gas.. DO NOT pull his finger!’
tattooed on my forhead.
IN THE END
I am not making a cry out to the Christian community to go get a tattoo.
Mom.. if you are reading this.. DON’T DO IT!! What I am endorsing
is for us all as believers to be unashamed of our faith, and that our
lives with blatantly show our association with Jesus… AND that our
lives and our presence makes the one true God smile at us.
